Palo Santo means “Holy Wood” in Castilian, it is the popular name for the Bursera Graveolens tree. This wood is used by the Incas, Native Peoples, Healers and Shamans in several countries in Latin America. The powers of its aroma, surprisingly sweet and soft, are always present in the rituals of cleansing, purification and in the spiritual ceremonies of these peoples of the Forest until today.
Traces of Palo Santo have been found in archaeological sites of ceremonial centers of Pre-Inca peoples. The Palo Santo tree lives between 50 and 90 years, and to obtain wood chips with satisfactory aromatic quality, it can only be extracted from the trunks after the tree's natural death (tipping) and it must remain in the same place for a period which varies from 4 to 10 years curing over time and in the same place to create an aromatic resin in itself and become the true Palo Santo. Considered magical, this sacred wood, like a Phoenix, must wait for death to pass through the process of rebirth, through the action of time, the variations of the environment and without human intervention.
Palo Santo is enjoyed by many for its energetically cleansing and healing properties similar to Sage and Cedar. It is a strong medicine that has been popularized for its heavenly presence in keeping energies grounded and clear. It creates a pleasant, fresh smoke that works well in keeping away mosquitoes and other flying insects which is one of the prime uses for the people who live in Ecuador and Peru.
